Internships with the City

The Community Development Intern is a qualified undergraduate or graduate student who will support key planning and housing initiatives within the City’s Community Development Department. Under general supervision, the intern will assist with research, data collection, outreach, and analysis related to federally guided planning efforts and local housing strategies. This internship is designed to provide a meaningful, hands-on learning experience in municipal community development, with exposure to policy implementation, grant-supported planning, and collaboration with nonprofit and community partners.

Under the supervision of the Economic Development Coordinator, this internship offers a hands-on opportunity to support a wide range of economic development initiatives. The role will involve contributing to various projects and tasks that foster the growth of the local economy. Responsibilities will include assisting with research, data analysis, program implementation, and administrative support to ensure the successful advancement of key economic development goals. 

Under the supervision of the Human Resources Director, the intern will support the HR team by conducting research on the use of emerging technologies, data analytics, and internal communications platforms in both public and private sector Human Resources operations. This role emphasizes research, data collection, analysis, and reporting to identify best practices, operational challenges, and opportunities for modernization. The intern will contribute to actionable insights that inform HR strategy, digital transformation initiatives, and policy recommendations.

Under supervision of the City Auditor, the Audit Intern supports internal audit engagements in accordance with the Global Internal Audit Standards (IIA Red Book) and assists with evaluating municipal operations, gathering and analyzing audit evidence, and developing audit objectives and methodologies. The intern prepares audit documentation and work papers, contributing to reviews that promote transparency, efficiency, and accountability in City operations.

Under supervision of the Long Range Planning Administrator, the Long Range Planning intern will assist with a variety of planning and development projects, providing research, analysis, and support for long-term community growth initiatives. The intern will gain hands-on experience implementing the City’s Comprehensive Plan, small area plans, and other strategic planning projects while contributing to public engagement efforts, reporting, and data presentation. This role provides a unique opportunity to observe and participate in municipal planning processes and develop professional skills in urban planning and community development. 

Under the general supervision of the department’s GIS or Engineering staff, the GIS Intern will support the maintenance, analysis, and production of geographic data and mapping products used across multiple Public Works divisions, including Street Maintenance, Drainage, Landscape Maintenance, Traffic, Facilities Maintenance, Capital Projects, and Irrigation. The intern will assist with updating spatial databases, producing cartographic products, conducting data analysis, and supporting both office staff and field crews. This role provides hands-on experience applying GIS principles in a municipal environment where accurate data directly supports planning, operations, and decision making.
